A major controversy has erupted in the world of Fijian rugby, with the Malolo Rugby Union, the reigning champions, questioning the financial transparency surrounding the recent Skipper Cup finals.
The core issue? Malolo is demanding answers about the handling of gate revenue, raising doubts about the reported attendance figures and the distribution of funds.
In a bold statement, Malolo expressed concerns over the discrepancy between the Fiji Sports Council's reported attendance of 11,000 and their own estimates, which suggest a significantly higher crowd. With ticket prices at $20, the expected revenue should have been around $220,000, but the council declared takings of just over $59,000.
But here's where it gets controversial... Malolo claims they received no breakdown of ticket sales or deductions. They also highlight the inconsistency in the semifinal figures, questioning how the final, with a larger crowd, generated only slightly more revenue.
The union further alleges that the finalists' share of the takings did not reflect the reported attendance, and they point to deductions made from one of the teams, which raises questions about the determination of these deductions.
And this is the part most people miss... Malolo believes that the players at the domestic elite level deserve better support and that the handling of cash, as evidenced by a photograph shared online, adds to their concerns about match-day operations.
Additionally, Malolo's prize money was reduced due to compliance fines, and they received a mere $120 for meal allowances after the grand final, which they were instructed to use for purchasing kava.
In their statement, Malolo calls for stronger governance, clearer accountability, and higher administrative standards in Fijian rugby.
FBC Sports is awaiting responses from the Fiji Rugby Union and the Fiji Sports Council to shed light on these serious allegations.
